Introduction

The ASTM F1487-25 Standard was revised in June of 2025 in which will bring impacts on children’s playground design. Mr. Kenneth S. Kutska, Chair of ASTM Subcommittee for performance requirements for public playground equipment will present all the material changes that have taken place since then in this hybrid seminar.

The content of the seminar will reinforce the requirement for designers and manufacturers of playground equipment to conduct a benefit and risk assessment of new products and designs of playgrounds and playground equipment that is not specifically defined within the current standard.

In addition, the inclusion of new requirements for Fully Enclosed Structures and Fully Enclosed Slides will also be addressed. These requirements provide the opportunity to consider the reduction of the equipment’s fall height which may also reduce the performance requirements for the critical height rating of the protective impact attenuating surfacing under and around the playground equipment required use zones and also may reduce the use zone special requirements for the protective surfacing.
