Q:What is the major difference between Operational Playground Inspection Course Two-Day (RPII Level 2) & Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)?

A:The major difference lies in the organizations that offer their recognition in different regions for two different playground safety standards. RPII Level 2 is offered by the Register of Play Inspectors International (RPII), emphasizing and deepening the understanding of level 2 operational inspection and addressing the EN1176 standard. In CPSI, it addresses the ASTM standard.  

Furthermore, RPII Level 2 supports suppliers, operators, management in the development of their monthly operational inspections and maintenance. For individual who are responsible to carry out outdoor annual or post-installation inspection of EN standard playground equipment, they need to be certified in RPII Annual Inspector for outdoor play safety (RPII Level 3).


Q:Is this course focus equipping candidate's skill on playground equipment inspection only?

A:This programme covers how to carry out visual and operational detailed inspection of playground equipment AS WELL AS the immediate surroundings nearby the play area, such as seats, litter bins, vegetation, lighting, other furniture and non play items.


Q:Are there prerequisites or language requirements?

A:There are NO prerequisites but please note that the course is conducted in English.

Certification :

Introduction

In view of the trend that more innovative play spaces, custom designed play settings with play equipment supplied from Europe, there is a need in the field for knowledge of the European playground equipment safety standard and risk management of children’s play areas to be re-introduced to Hong Kong.

The RPII certified Operational (Level 2) Playground Inspection Training is a comprehensive 2-days programme that provides both classroom presentation and physical site visits to fully equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a competent playground inspector, who are responsible for the operational inspections on monthly/quarterly basis. It is also suitable for those in a supervisory or maintenance role who wish to have a greater knowledge of the relevant European Standards and legislation relating to playgrounds. This program covers the general safety and ongoing condition of the play area, as well as a broad overview of the entire playground industry and its compliance requirements according to EN1176 Part 1-7. 

Objectives

Candidates who attend this course will be able to: 

  • Understand the relevant playground safety standards in EN1176 that apply to outdoor play facilities. 
  • Know the levels of inspection and how they are carried out. 
  • Be able to execute visual and operational detailed inspection included equipment ground clearances, ground surface finishes, exposed foundations, sharp edges, missing parts, excessive wear (of moving parts) and structural integrity 
  • Be able to develop an effective documentation, recording and reporting system

David is a Director and an examiner of the professional body for playground inspection – The Register of Play Inspectors International Limited. This body is endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive. He is qualified on this body at the highest level and undertakes training for safety inspectors on behalf of the body. He also provides training facilities on behalf of RoSPA.  

In addition to his involvement with the professional body, he is a member of British Standards Institution (BSI) Technical Committee SW/65 on playground equipment standards and SW/136 for sports and recreational equipment. These committees also cover the provision of sports facilities though BS EN 15312 and roller sports (skate parks) through BS EN 14974 and inflatable play items through BS EN 14960. David was the UK's Principle Expert during the initial development and publication of the European Standard on roller sports (BS EN 14974).
