Introduction
This course is aimed at those who are responsible for the inspection and maintenance of wheeled sports facilities (which include BMX, skateboarding, and inline skating features).
Candidates will understand the relevant safety standards in EN14974 that apply to wheeled sports facilities. With the practical onsite inspection exercise, candidates will learn how to execute a logical and systematic approach to inspecting the wheeled sports areas and its surroundings.
Objectives
Candidates who attend this course will be able to:
- Understand the relevant safety standards in EN14974 that apply to wheeled sports areas.
- Understand the logical and systematic approach to inspecting the wheeled sports areas as well as the nearby surroundings.
- Identify the common fault on popular items in wheeled sports areas.
Content Details
- Introduction of BS PAS 35 and relevant sections of EN1176
- Outline of BS EN14974, where it differs from PAS 35
- Documentation, reporting and importance of record keeping
- A logical and systematic approach to inspecting
- Risk assessment of wheeled sports areas including skateboarding, inline skating and BMX
- Inspection of approaches to wheeled sports areas including signs & road barriers as well as the nearby wheeled sports surroundings, i.e. shrubbery and gates
- Inspection of the active wheeled sports area within the fenced surround such as seats, litter bins, vegetation, lighting, and non-play items
- Inspection of specific wheeled sports equipment or features including surfacing
- Common faults on popular items

Christopher Taylor is the Technical Advisor, RPII Outdoor Annual Inspector, RPII Routine & Operational Level Trainer and Examiner. He has 7 years of experience on undertaking the annual inspections of playgrounds, skateparks, fitness equipment, gymnasium equipment and multi-use games areas as well as completing specialized testing on playground timbers and surfacing. Chris also has rich experience on handling various technical queries included but not limited to legal requirement, assessing design plans for playgrounds, reviewing the reports produced by other annual inspectors.
