︱About RPII and the qualification
Q1:Who are the RPII (Register of play Inspector’s International)?
The Register of Play Inspectors International (RPII) is the official UK body for examining, accrediting and certificating inflatable, indoor and outdoor play inspectors. The RPII also accredits courses for the training of inspectors to ensure that playground safety standards are met and adhered to for your complete peace of mind.
Q2:What is Annual Playground Inspections (Outdoor)
These inspections should be carried out by an appropriately qualified inspector who is independent to the owner or operator of the play area. This inspection will review the condition of the equipment, safety surfaces and general environment. It will provide a full written report with risk assessment advising whether the playground/equipment meets the relevant safety standards and identify any non-compliant areas or items.
Q3:What qualifications should I look for in a playground inspector?
In order to carry out Annual and Post Installation Inspections, you should only use RPII inspectors who are qualified to an ‘Annual’ Level. All RPII Annual Inspectors will be able to issue proof of their status in the form of a certificate and an ID badge including their DBS number, If still in doubt, you should refer to the RPII website where a full list of Annual Inspectors can be found.
The RPII (Register of Playground Inspectors) is an independent examination body that provides certification and training to ensure that playground inspectors are properly qualified. Within the RPII, there are 3 different levels of inspectors: Routine, Operational and Annual. It’s highly recommended that you use the correct level of inspector for the type of inspection you would like carried out, as the level of knowledge required between Operational and Annual inspectors varies to a significant degree.
Q4:Am I eligible to enroll the course?
Professionals who develop, manage or maintain the safety of playground facilities in park, schools, hotels, housing estates, campsites or residential complexes. Applicants should also have the experience and competence listed below while applying for the course:
- A good working knowledge of playground inspections (e.g. carry out typical inspection or preparing the written report, etc). It is recommended the applicant already have carried out regular Operational inspections.
- Understanding of all current applicable standards
- An understanding of how children use playgrounds and legal requirements for owner or operators of play facilities.
Q5:Who decides the selection list? Any interview will be arranged for the applicants?
RPII board. No interview will be arranged.
Q6:Are there any waiting lists for applicants? How and when will I be informed?
Yes, there will be a waiting list for applicants. You will be notified on the results announcement day (12 AUG 2025).

Q7:What is the medium of instruction?
The medium of instruction in English, including all teaching materials.
Q8:How long for this course? Are all sessions arranged as online sessions?
An online Preparatory Session will be arranged at the end of September 2025, while the course officially starts from 8 October 2025. There are introductory 3-day in-person introductory course in Hong Kong followed by a series of online seminars and workshops from October 2025 to January 2026. An intensive in-person review session will be arranged in February 2026 followed by written and practical assessment.

Q9:What will cover in the syllabus? Which standards will be covered in this course?
The course will cover all parts under the standards EN 1176, EN16630, EN 15312, EN 14874, EN 16899 and EN16879, clause by clause showing compliance and non-compliance on a variety of types. This will include, where relevant, the rationale behind the clause to enable a better understanding of what the standard is trying to achieve.
Candidates will also study the safe and fir maintenance, risk assessments, common repairs and their efficacy as well as the typical material used, with reference to the materials modules.
Q10:Can I learn how to use probes and other inspection tools to inspect the equipment in this course?
Candidates will learn how to use the inspection devices within the standards to inspect the equipment and the play space.
Q11:Do I need to buy a set of EN standard inspection tools to attend this course?
The local course operator (Playright) will provide a set of EN standard inspection tools for learners to borrow by appointment for studying or practice. During the examination, examiner will provide a full set of inspection tools for candidate to use.
Q12:Can non-local applicants apply for the course?
Yes. We accept overseas application but please note that all the face-to-face sessions will be conducted in Hong Kong, including written and practical examination. Candidates are required to arrange their accommodation by themselves.

Q13:How long will the written examination be for each student?
The written examination is undertaken in a single session of 3.5 hours. No reference material is allowed in the examination (closed-book).
Q14:What topics will be covered in the examination?
It is separated into 8 different sections, all of which are covered by the syllabus of this course. To pass the examination you must achieve the pass mark (70%) in each of the 8 sections.

Q15:What does practical exam looks like?
The practical on-site assessment is undertaken individually. You may not seek outside help during the assessment, but you may refer to standards, notes or other materials in your possession. It is a real-world inspection of a whole playground and other recreational facilities.
You have to inspect the equipment, surfaces and ancillary items. Submit a report, which must include elements such as compliance, safety, risk assessments, recommendations, etc. You will be assessed on your ability to conduct a thorough, logical inspection, with reference to the appropriate standards.
You will also be examined on your knowledge of the inspection devices listed within the standards, including:
- Probes,
- Test template,
- Finger rods,
- Toggle tester,
- Ring gauge.
Q16:Any retake in the examination?
No retake for candidates who fail in the examination.
